Hi all,

Happy Independence Day!!

I am planning to get a rear-mount bike rack since I have a hitch, but in VA we cannot block the license plate.

Any advice on how to mount 2 bikes on a rack without blocking the plate?

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Sure, a cop could stop you but most all know it's a temporary issue not a deliberate attempt to cover it up. The only issue to really worry about is if you use a 'toll by plate' road or tunnel. You could wind up with a very late notification of owing a toll and possibly get hit with late payment fees.

Some bike rack manufacturers offer a license plate relocation kit if your really concerned about getting stopped.

1up sells a license plate holder that goes with their rack. Or zip tie it to the bikes. If driving at night it needs to be lit up too.

Most people, if just driving to and from the trails, don't do anything.

With more than 30 years in LE I never once cared about a bike mounted on the back of a vehicle covering a license plate. Officers know it's temporary. Now if an officer sees the bikes on there time after time and it appears they are not removed then you may be stopped. But no matter it is still a non-moving violation.
