What insurance companies are available in the area? Any better than Kaiser? I don’t like their dictator style of deciding what pharmacies you may fill your prescriptions, only covering doctors they provide (thereby forcing you to leave your doctors if you want coverage), and most annoyingly, you have to get permission AKA a “referral” from their general practitioner even if you’ve never met him/her if you want to make an appointment a specific kind of doctor. LOL, it’s so ridiculous. Help! Advice?

Kaiser. But I don’t like them, so I want to know what else is available in the area.

I've used Aetna, United healthcare, BCBS and now apwu. They all have there their pros and cons.

It's not really cost effective to get health insurance from other than your employer.

I know some people who really like Kaiser, but we prefer to use our own doctors especially if you've been using them for years so we don't like HMOs.

Check with your preferred PCP and see what insurance they accept.

Most will require you to get a referral to see a specialist or for imaging so Kaiser isn't different from most others in that aspect. And you want a PPO plan which allows you the flexibility of choosing physicians in or out of network but the premiums are more expensive.

Does your employer not offer a PPO plan?
