A good friend of mine got MERSA while being treated for lung cancer at INOVA, and died from the MERSA. Dick Cheney had much better luck with his heart transplant there.

Ugh. I'm going into INOVA Fairfax for surgery this week. I hate hearing this stuff.

Macalan I know. I am especially concerned as I am in my 60s. Wouldn’t UVA Medical Center be in Charlottesville?

I live in Northern VA and go to local doctors for physicals.

But for specialists or surgeries I travel to Washington, DC , Bethesda, MD or Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD.
Easy to travel to any of these. The longest transit time - to Baltimore - is 2 hours at the most.

I am as well, which is why good medical care wherever we end up is critical.

Yes, UVA is in Charlottesville and VCU is in Richmond. There's a couple highly rated hospitals in DC as well (in additional to Inova Fairfax in Falls Church).

Default Quality Medical Care - Williamsburg, Newport News vs NOVA

We are also looking at a possible relocation to Nothern VA. US News rates UVA Medical Center as tops in the state with VCU Richmond second. Inova Fairfax in Falls Church is also rated highly as are a few hospitals in DC.

Consider that if you have something extremely serious, Johns Hospkins Hospital is only a little over an hour away from Northern VA.
We are retirees currently living in Nassau County (just outside NYC). There are many good hospitals and many medical groups/specialists close by. Considering relocating to Williamsburg, Newport News area. Thoughts?

Now to your original question I would say that the healthcare in this area is great. And even if you are not a fan of what is on offer here Baltimore has medical universities and Johns Hopkins.

This is going to make it hard when I retire because I would like to move to a more rural area but it will be hard moving away from an area so rich in healthcare options for some place that may be having a hard time drawing the best doctors.

Old Guard I have no idea what you are talking about so yes I must be stupid. I asked a very simple and general question. How are people finding medical care up there? That is all I need to know. Not how “powerful” the people are and so therefore it must be good care. Just an overly simple question.

Greater DC has some of the best medical care in the country, including specialties. I think it’s a combination of being a huge metro area; having all the HHS agencies, along with great higher ed generally; and being near other major cities. Here in NoVA Georgetown U Hospital is just across the river, and Johns Hopkins U is an hour away. And then we have the military hospitals like Walter Reed and Belvoir.

And if you need some specialist we don’t have, Philly is not that far past Baltimore.
