My advice is to let your friends/family know you are open to the idea. They could have a friend recently divorced, or moving to the area and need a place for a couple of months. This lets you test the water so to speak and hopefully the person would be a known entity as opposed to a complete stranger. This would also give you a test run to see how you like living with a roommate.
