Like any other safety measure … like vaccines, like seat belts, like stair handrails, like smoke detectors … do masks eliminate risks? Certainly not. Do they *reduce* risks? Yes.

Seat belts don’t guarantee that you will not die in a crash, but we still wear them because they help reduce the risk.

Simple risk mitigation.

To those wearing masks in 2023, how often did you wear a mask in public prior to February 2020?

If you didn't, why not? 60K people died of the flu in 2018. Masks were certainly widely available before the pandemic shortage.

While everyone were forced to mask up, people were still getting sick so the whole effectiveness of the practice is dubious IMO.

It's like being told if you were vaccinated and boosted you wouldn't get covid.
Who said that being vaccinated and boosted meant you wouldn't get covid? I believe it was clearly stated over and over in the news that being vaccinated MEANT that you could still get covid but it wouldn't be as bad as getting it when NOT vaccinated.

It's no different than getting a flu shot... you can STILL get the flu. It just won't be as bad if not vaccinated.

You're more likely to die of heart disease but the drive thru line at any fast food place shows what people care more about. I'm more glad of Chick-fil-a than mask wearing...

Honestly I’ve given up on masking for myself. But I’m not going to begrudge someone like my mother who is in a couple of high-risk categories due to her age for example for masking up and being extra cautious. For those populations, COVID ain’t anything to play with.

A couple years before covid, I had to travel to my company's headquarters for an important meeting. I had been sick in the days leading up to the trip, but I really felt like it was necessary for me to go. I didn't think I was still contagious, but I didn't want to take any chances, so I wore a mask traveling and during the meeting. I got a lot of strange looks, but no one seemed to acknowledge that it was more for their benefit than for mine. Whatever.

The funny thing is that I was flying on Southwest, and discovered that at the time, no one wanted to voluntarily sit next to the weirdo wearing a mask. I managed to have an empty seat next to me both ways. You'd better believe that I continued to wear masks on future trips! LOL! Of course, it doesn't have quite the same effect anymore.

I listen to the CDC people and their recs. Not Biden or any politician. That would be pretty ridiculous.
