Just wondering if commuting 1 hour is typical in NOVA???? We're looking at living in Bristow and commuting to Alexandria. About a 1hr. commute on the VRE. Seems like a lot of people have to commute 1 hr unless they live inside the beltway. Do you just get used to it? I'm having a hard time finding a shorter commute with all that we want: house with enough room for a family of 5, good schools and a safe area. Any thoughts?

I think Citi-data averages commute time to be 40 minutes each way for people in Prince William County. Yes, it is very typical. Yes you get used to it. I'm doing 2:45 each way...2 hours, 45 mins.

TWO HOURS AND 45 MINUTES EACH WAY!!!! YIKES! I thought dh had it bad. We live in Winchester and he commutes about 1 hour, 20 min each way. And to the OP, we have everything we want here as far as housing.

An hour is about average.... which means that a significant number of people commute for over an hour. While NOVA arguably has the "best" job market in the country, much of it is concentrated in Fairfax County, in which a SFH in a desirable community is beyond the reach of almost all of the middle-class. So people trek out to Prince William, Loudoun, Spotsylvania, or even over to West Virginia to find their acre of family-friendly land.

Gosh, I'm glad I live 10.8 miles from work! A 1 hour commute is like a severe traffic accident around here.

Default commute time

We're moving from TX to NOVA at the end of the month and w/gas prices sky rocketing, I'm considering of getting a house closer to where my spouse works, w/c is in Front Royal. He now lives in WV and commutes 45 mins. one way and most of his co-workers commute atleast 30 mins. one way. I think 1 hr. commute is common. Tamitrail, any input abt. Warren school district? I really like Stephens City but gas is just sky rocketing,,,

It's only 4 days a week, and 4-5 hours on-site.

From what I hear, the schools aren't really that good in Warren County. I back that statement up with knowing someone who was born and raised there and says they would never send their kids to Warren County schools as well as some of dh's coworkers. The percentage of homeschoolers in FR is really high. As far as living in Front Royal, there isn't much there. I know they have built some new stores, etc., but a lot of people come from there into Frederick County for their kid's activities.

I think you should forget about buying a house right now and just rent to see where you want to live, how the schools are and how much of a commute your husband can handle. The market is not going to pick up any time soon and you may get an even better bargain if you wait a while anyway.

So you spend more time commuting in a week than you actually spend at the site? 5 1/2 hours traveling per day verses 4-5 hours working. That is tough.
