Hi,

Is anyone familiar with the Amberleigh townhomes in Alexandria? Are they in a nice, safe area? I keep getting conflicting information about how close they are to the metro station. Some say they are in walking distance within two or three blocks and some say you should catch the bus. Any advice?

There is a walking path from somewhere in the neighborhood to the Metro station. I haven't used it so I don't know the distance. There have been a number of robberies on the path -- not often but enough that I would advise against walking alone or walking there at night. The neighborhood itself has a good reputation as far as I know.

I had a friend that lived in Amberleigh, and according to her, there's a path in the rear of the neighborhood that leads directly to the metro station and her dad used it everyday; however, like Yankeesfan said, there have been some unfortunate crimes, but nothing severe. If you want to go by car, however, you have to drive out the neighborhood onto Beulah, then the Pkwy, and then the Station, which is a longer distance.

In my opinion, Amberleigh as a whole is a middle-class/working class neighborhood with townhomes built in the early to late 1980s. It's relatively safe, and it's starting to show it's age, but I've heard some pretty negative things about the adjacent neighborhood, Windsor Park, which has townhomes from the 1960s. Yet, across the street from Amberleigh and southward on Beulah, you have some very nice neighborhoods like Hunter's Crest with homes that are $1 mil + and Island Creek, Kingstowne, etc.

Amberleigh is a wonderful community. Easy walk or bike ride to Metro and the VRE commuter train. Lots of people use it daily. Years ago we had a one man (17 year old) mugging machine. He was caught. Also, same time period we had a few bad renters in the neighborhood that are no longer here. What I love about it is you're close to everything in minutes but when you're home it's big trees, rolling hills, homes with beautiful gardens, three playgrounds for the kids. We have a beautiful new nature trail that feels so much like the one I hike in the Winter Green resort. No other townhouse community in Kingstowne come close to our common spaces. After twenty years of living here I still love this community. The only negative's off hand is like most communities built after 1975 the construction is not that good, and we do not have a pool. Sadly, I will be selling soon due to retirement.

I am moving into the Amberleigh TH community in a few weeks. If everything is good, we're going to offer to purchase the TH or look for something in that community. I will keep an eye out for yours since noticed there's not that much availability.
