Hi! I was wondering if anyone was familiar with the Parkfairfax neighborhood in Alexandria? Pro's/Con's, is it safe...etc

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I think it's a nice area. It borders on a not-so-nice area, Arlandria, but as far as I know, the crime there (mostly of the non-violent variety, this isn't SEDC) doesn't really cross over into Parkfairfax.

A pro or con, depending on how you look at it, is that the neighborhood is very old. I think it dates back to the 20's. A pro is that it looks, at least from the outside, like it's been maintained well since then. A con is that for someplace so close to DC, it's not that Metro-accessible, although I think there is a bus or two that comes through there.

Pros:

Ample buses to the Pentagon during rush hour.
Safe.
Clean.

Cons:

The condos just look old, well-maintained, but old.
Borders Arlandria.

I agree with the posts above. If you're comfortable living in a condo with some character on the inside then confirm that your choices are still well-maintained on the inside and go for it. I probably wouldn't mind living there myself.

A lot of younger families and professionals live there because it is very close to the city and relatively inexpensive. The units are pretty small and were kind of outdated when I looked in that area in 2002. Richard Nixon used to live there when he was a Congressman.

Thanks so much everyone I appreciate the replies. Dh and I are putting our house up for rent and moving closer in, we love Old town Alexandria but it is quite pricey so we looked at a few open houses in Parkfairfax and while the area is definitely old, it seemed like it was quiet with a lot of folks out walking their dogs, and you couldn't ask to be closer to 395. The units we looked at were right close to Quaker lane so at least they weren't bordering W Glebe Road. I am thinking W Glebe is the area that is Arlandia?

We are not sure if it is for us, still thinking. We did see a nice unit for sale in the Carlyle but it was $100,000 more and I don't know if a high rise is for us or not, the one thing about Parkfairfax was a lot of nice grassy areas and trees.

Thanks again!

That's correct. The units closer to Quaker are going to be on the "nicer" side of town, although I don't think there's a crime problem closer to W Glebe in Parkfairfax itself either.

one thing you should know about parkfairfax is that they have an extremely strict homeowners association. you have to approve all updates, and certain updates can't be made. no central AC. window units galore.
