Hello all, I desperately need your expert advice!

So, I just got a job and it'll be based in McLean, VA.

We are a couple that looking for an apartment in VA.
I would like a short commute to work, but still be in the nice area with things to do, shopping center, grocery shops, cafe and restaurants around.

We saw some nice apartments in Fairfax( Carmel Veinna Metro and The Falls at Flint Hill ) but the area looks too quiet.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thank yaaa!

There are tons of places to rent in the McLean/Tyson's area - have you checked that out? The areas has lots of things to do as well as being convenient to DC/Arlington/Alex. areas. Since you would have somewhat of a reverse commute - a possibility might be to live in Arlington and commute to McLean for work.

I second the reverse commute post!!! Commuting from Fairfax to Tysons can be a nightmare--66 is bad news. 123 up through Vienna doesn't often help that much. Definitely exhaust living in Tysons, McLean, Vienna and Arlington before even looking at Fairfax!!!

I live in Fairfax right near the Carmel apartments. Those are nice apartments, but I would not recommend the area at all. It has one wonderful thing - proximity to the Metro station. But otherwise, no matter what you're looking for, this area doesn't have it! If you're looking for nightlife, restaurants, coffee shops, etc., then you're out of luck. We've got one strip mall in walking distance and it's not all that impressive. It is a very quiet area - but because it's right off Lee Hwy. and Rt. 66, it's not the nice, bucolic kind of quiet that some people like. It's more of a "people sleep here because it's next to Metro but don't spend much time here otherwise" kind of quiet.

Arlington is fantastic if you can afford it. Tons to do, really fun vibe, everything is walkable. Vienna isn't bad, either - it's probably a little quieter than what you're looking for (it tends to be a "family" place rather than a "young professionals" place) but it's super convenient for your commute and if you get in the right area you will find yourself near plenty of restaurants and such. Tyson's is a bit of a pain (the roads there are always busy) but again, a great commute and way more stuff to do than the butt end of Fairfax

Try the Crystal City area and check Crystal Quarters ! That area is full of shops, restaurants and walking distance to metro.
