Baltimore definitely has more of the hipster, tat type areas.

My picks would be...

In DC:
U Street, Columbia Heights, Takoma Park, Shaw, Bloomingdale

Virginia:
No where...haha.

And the first time you get carjacked; you might decide you're a little conservative after all.

Thanks for all the responses. I seem to be stuck - so far all I've found in my price range are boring wonderbread-and-mayonnaise sandwich (read: south alexandria) or flak jacket (much of D.C.).

Any thoughts on the waterfront area? I hear it's closer to flak jacket, but on the upswing.

There are a lot of killins in the residential areas of SW, if that is what you're talking about. Union St. in Alex. is sooo expensive.

The City Paper's Neighborhood Guide might give you some useful information about where to live in DC. It's got a bit of tongue-in-cheek style, but the contents are legitimate.

No part of NoVA is hip, sorry to say. I like it here okay overall, but I hold no illusions about hipness As someone else said, Takoma Park MD may be worth a look if you're willing to head to that side of the border, though I'm not sure what prices are like there at the moment.

Takoma park and Silver Spring look good, except the commute to Rosslyn would be hellish, so I'd rather steer clear.

U-street has become expensive - nothing under 500k there.

It's more tree-lined & quiet than hip, but Fairlington and similar townhouse communities in Alexandria/Arlington might be affordable, and you are close enough to commute to wherever you consider hip.

I live across the street from the Waterfront metro (2 months so far) and it seems safe to me. I happen to a big guy, which probably helps, but still.

There's little retail in my immediate area except a small Safeway, CVS, dry cleaners, and the restaurants actually on the waterfront (of course I'm new to the neighborhood and might be missing a lot of stores). I think there might be some nightclubs on the waterfront too.

FWIW, I found my rental thru a real estate agent.

If you say on the west side of Rock Creek, when you're in DC, you are about 100 times safer.
