With people booking hotels as far away as York, PA, I have been reading and hearing a decent amount about people renting out their extra rooms and even whole houses for the inauguration. I've seen ads as far south as Fredericksburg and as far north as Frederick, MD. With the prices some people are asking (who knows if they are actually getting it), it is tempting to think about. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think it would be complicated to do? I am sure one could interview and screen the renters. If you were going to be away on a trip, would you be willing to rent out the house and leave it under the watchful eye of a trusted neighbor?

The ONLY way I would do that is if it was through a friend-of-a-friend. Case in point, when I graduated from Tech (many moons ago), my family did rent a townhouse from a sorority sister. It was nice having the whole place to ourselves. BUT there is a big difference in what a college student has (r.e. valuables) than you will in your home.

And from what I've heard, the hotels in Richmond are booking up too.

Anyone have any idea about what the demand would be for a parking space in DC? I have a private spot right by the Capitol, Mall, & metro stations that I could rent out to someone.

I have thought about renting my own place as well, but this is the way i would do it. I would require the first half of the payment the day the reservation is made. I would then require the balance plus a security deposit paid with a certified check the day they arrive. In addition, I would call your insurance company and tell them you are renting the place for the weekend and make sure you are covered.

I've been thinking about it too...live near Arlington, within walking distance to a metro station, so I think I could get a decent price for it.

It's a 2 br/1 ba, and has a parking space which I'm hoping will add to the value.

Prob going to list it for $750/night. Do you think I should offer lower? It sounds like too much, but the Red Roof Inn is going for $700/night!

If we weren't around during the days surrounding the inauguration, I don't know if I could rent out my house to strangers when I'm not around.

I just went on the Craig's List DC site and looked at the Housing Wanted section. There are quite a few listings so you may want to investigate and see what they are doing. One interesting thing is the House Swap, and that way you get a vacation yourself.
