Hi there,
We are living in Fairfax city in a rental house. We are planning to buy a house. But we are really confused about the location. We can afford a townhouse in Fairfax but not a SF house. (our budget is 450K for a townhouse and 500k for a sf house). And we like Ashburn a lot as the metro plan is approved and as well as the Single family homes. As we are new to Fairfax (moved very recently) we dont know what to go for? My husband is a consultant, he pretty much works around DC or Maryland. I am working in Reston. Please give us your thoughts. Thank you!

Both communities are nice and family-friendly. But if you choose to live in Ashburn, your commute to Reston will be doable, but your husband better buckle up for a nasty commute whether he works in DC or MD. I would not buy there counting on the metro--that's going to take YEARS down the road.

I think the real estate market is going to drop even further, but I would stay as centralized as possible, or at least be close to one of y'alls work place.

What kind of SF house are you looking for? There certainly are SF homes available in FFX City for under half a million! Or, even closer than FFX City, you could find someplace in Vienna or Oakton convenient to Fox Mill Road for you to get to Reston and convenient to Metro for your husband...
