Thank you for the private school information and explaining why you like Ashburn. We're going to have to take a drive there next week and check it out. Thanks again!
Public. I don't know anything about private...Good luck on your move!

Schools are a top priority - i'll have one child in each kind of school in the fall (elem, middle and high). I'm having trouble understanding the pros and cons of Loudoun County schools and PW County schools. The Ashburn schools are rated pretty well on great schools but it seems whenever I find a good elementary school, the high school for it isn't rated well or vice versa. On the other hand, the PW schools in the Gainesville/Haymarket seem to be rated really high all around...but, on this board, there is a lot of negative talk about PW county in general.

Can anyone clear this up or set me straight? I'm so confused....

Thank you so much!!
We are moving from South Carolina to Haymarket, va and were very impressed with the community of Haymarket and the people we meet there. The problem with the public schools in PW County is simply the number of students in a class. Our concern is to not put our daughter in with 28 other kindergarten students. That would happen in any public school. We are Catholic but could not get our daughter into a Catholic school because they are full. We heard about several other private schools, Highland in nearby Fauquier County and Wakefield not far from Haymarket. But two other schools that are Christian and have affordable tuition are Haymarket Baptist and St. Paul's School. Haymarket Baptist does not go beyond Kindergarten. St. Paul's School goes up to 3rd or 4th grade. They are not only affordable but have been highly recommended. Their class sizes are very small. This is the main reason we are looking at private school over public school. I think you will find that PW public schools are similar to Loudoun public schools. I have been researching this with my wife for the past six months. It is not that PW public schools are not good, they just cannot offer a low teacher-student ratio and for a child in the middle this is critical, at least during the elementary years.

Can you please recommend some private high schools? My daughter is also an average student with ADD and needs a smaller classroom.

"Good high schools get kids from somewhere. There must be some good elementary schools that are feeding into the good high schools"

Good students and good schools are not the same thing. DD attended a GT center in Fairfax county in 5th grade, the students were all smart (and some she ended up seeing again years later at TJ) but the teacher was very bad.

If it was a woman at Stratford Landing she left (early retirement?) after getting some harsh reviews from parents and students.

I don't recommend the area around route 1 in Woodbridge. As a former resident of PWC, the schools around route 1 area have lots of diversity of people. The class sizes tended to be big. Now I live in the city, where there are just 15-16 kids for kindergarten, which have 2 teachers per class. Like ChristineVA said, if your kids are not high-achieving, they will fall through those cracks in the Eastern PWC schools system. Besides, if you have kids with learning disability, you will have to make sure that you really push the school to their limits to help the children. Otherwise, the help will happen slowly. That is based on my experience living there years ago but things may have change.

Another thing I can recommend is that to check out greatschool.net for school demographic. Don't compare the school rating between each state because their state tests are different. I don't give those rating as accurate. However, I have friends who still live in Woodbridge area who told me that Out of 3 high school in Woodbridge, freedom high is the one they don't prefer. It's not because of the academics, but because of some students who go there. After reading many reviews from many websites, I can see why they all say that.
