Where would be the closest cross country skiing trails? It looks like there is something in W. Virginia but I'm not sure how long the drive is (I'm in Loudoun County). We would love to find a place with trails and equipment rental. Any suggestions?

The DC area is hard on cross-country skiers. I once drove to Hidden Valley (Pa), which is about 2.5 hours from McLean. The West Virginia locations are more like 4-5 hours. Wisp Resort, in Garrett County (Md) is about a 3 hour drive from DC, almost all on interstates. Garrett County gets lots of snow, so its trails will be open even when DC is green.

Many thanks for asking the question (EuroExpat), and for sharing the link to White Grass (VEIK). My wife and I had talked briefly about finding a place for cross country skiing - we need some fun outside physical activity during the winter months when kayaking just isn't an option.

We've never cross-skied before, but it wasn't that long ago that we had never kayaked, either. White Grass looks like it could work for us very nicely.

Thanks Claremarie and VEIK for the suggestions! I'll look more into those places.. Looks like a couple of them are actual resorts so they might be worth staying at a couple of nights.

Cross country skiing IS fun and not as pricey as downhill or snowboarding. GreeneGene, go try it out! My dad (almost 60) does a 10-mile trail every day in the winter and is in awesome shape because of it.

For those considering exploring the world of cross-country skiing - the equipment isn't expensive, either. I bought a halfway-decent pair of Karhu skis and poles and Alpina boots for less than $200 total at a place in Columbia, Missouri called the Alpine Shop (kinda ironic, considering that I bought Nordic gear there - they mostly sold hiking stuff, though, IIRC). I'm a backcrountry person, myself, and you can do that at almost any of the big parks (Burke Lake, etc.) right in suburban NoVA, as long as there's enough snow on the ground. A few days ago would've been great, if you could stand the cold.

I saw a good number of cross country skiers on the trails of Reston during the last big snow. Though they were mostly the early birds because Reston does an excellent job of plowing the trails.

How is Loudoun for getting to downhill places? Can you get to any of the places out West of Richmond in less than three hours?

I was wishing during the last snow that I had a pair of cross country skis and the know-how to use them. How hard is it to learn? I'm a good skater and used to be pretty good at downhill skiing; think I could pick it up by myself, or would I need some tutelage?
