We've done this for several years and it is VERY "family friendly".
This would be my recommendation too. Enjoy!

I agree. My husband used to live two blocks from Iwo Jima and it's a great place to see the fireworks. We would watch the concert on TV, then run up the street at the end to watch.

We went down to the Mall for the concert and fireworks once, pre-9/11, and it was fun, but very very crowded. We ended up walking all the way back from the Capitol to Iwo Jima because the Metro was too jammed. I know that security is stricter now.

One fun thing to do, if you're interested in the concert (this goes for Memorial Day as well) - you can go to the dress rehearsal the day before. You can hear a lot better, because there's much less crowd noise.

Ooh, thanks for sharing the Iwo Jima idea! I had no idea people gathered there, but of course it makes perfect sense. Maybe we'll do that one this year.

Do they still have a few senators or other politicians read the Declaration of Independence from the steps of the Capital? I remember they used to do that in the morning. If so, that's was a fun way to get the flavor of being downtown for the 4th, while also avoiding the crowds.

I think they do that at the National Archives.
