If you can find the right McLean/WFC apartment, and the area appeals to you, do consider it seriously - it's a convenient area.

As the prior posts suggests, you will find some residents in McLean (or parts of Falls Church where the children attend school with actual students from McLean!) who would be considerably more excited if your husband were with the State Department or, better yet, a diplomat from the Netherlands or Finland, than if you're a U.S. military family. It probably won't bother your kids, but it could get under your skin.

I'll be interested to hear if you can find apartments in West Falls Church or McLean (Not Tysons Corner). I've seen houses for rent but not one apartment/condo building

That's going to be difficult to do I know. We have to have a completely furnished with all utilities paid, that takes hubby's gov't cc and accepts the per diem rate as payment in full. I know these are available closer in to DC so we may have to end up living there. Like I said we lived in Arlignton in Pentagon Row in 2007 for temporary housing and it was okay, but it was summer and the boys didn't have to go to school. Since this is not a permanent move we only bring clothes. It can be done I just may not end up exactly where I wanted. Oh well what an experience it will be.

Kids adapt easier than adults for the most part.

In the Springfield area, there are a lot of kids from military families.

In the McLean/West Falls Church area, there are a lot of kids from diplomat and state dept families.

That's what hubby says. The only one of our kids that has ever had an issue moving was our daughter and since she is no longer at home I guess the rest is easy. My 8 yr old says "yay, we get to live in an apartment and go swimming everyday." I am trying to be excited but it will be strange to be without all my "stuff" for a year or two.

DM me if you find one. We are in our TH for another year but are looking to live closer to DC next year. Thanks!

Ha ha - that is funny. When we were looking in McLean some of the listing agents brought up foreign diplomats living in the area like we were supposed to get very excited about this. I guess they thought we'd ask for more off the asking price if they were honest and just said the area is mostly full of doctors, lawyers, accountants and government workers. I do think there are more military in Burke and Springfield though since it's not as expensive and closer to the Pentagon.

We just signed a long-term lease on a SFH in Falls Church City, and got something very similar. Something like, "we almost never see leases like this without the name of one embassy or another on there." I don't even know what we were supposed to say to that.
