Apparently the state bridge inspectors came to Loudoun and 19 bridges were placed "under watch." The bridges are rated on a 1-9 scale. None of them were given a "1" (which means risk of imminent collapse) but we did get a "3" (bridge to the Bull Run Post Office).

State officials say these numbers should not alarm anyone, the ratings are used to determine maintenance priority. The Times quoted an official at VDOT as saying, "We have bridges that are structurally deficient that could be in commission for decades."

Ummmm.... not sure if I find that statement alarming or not. But what I really wonder is which overpasses or bridges they're talking about. The map isn't that specific:

Any guesses which bridges are being pinpointed here? I'm particularly curious about the bridge in Sterling near 28 and Church Road. Please tell me it's not that crazy interchange near Wegmans that soars high up into the air, that thing makes me nervous enough as it is.

There is a ton of data available at VDOT's Dashboard. Go to Condition, and then choose Loudoun from the dropdown. Click "Bridge Condition", and the detailed data fills in below. The "Advanced Report" button will show you the street names, and it also prompts you to download it as an Excel file. Then you can sort the "Struc Defic" column to show the 19 deficient bridges together. Don't worry - the partial cloverleaf on Rt. 28/Waxpool Road is not one of them. None of them have been built later than 1981.
