...through whom do you get your internet access? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Do you have to get your internet through a land line?

Right now Comcast is our only option for cable TV and we also have our internet through them, but they're just beyond bad. We hate them. We're just not sure where to get high-speed internet if we switch to satellite for TV, since we can't get Cox or FIOS.

Thanks!

you can always get hughesnet HughesNet Services

Comcast has customer support issues, but the quality of the service is great.

Comcast wasn't like this when we were in Alexandria, but out here in Bristow, it's really pretty awful. The internet part, anyway. Our connection's been slow since we moved in, and for the past few hours it's just been completely gone. I'm tethered in with my Blackberry right now. We've verified that it's not our computer; to be completely fair, I need to call Comcast back and get them to check things out before I totally rag on them.

To say that networking is not my forte would be an understatement, so I'm pretty much the classic uneducated consumer here. Does Comcast's (or any provider's) service quality vary by location?

Thanks for the HughesNet suggestion. I hadn't heard of them. I'll check them out!

I think Verizon has a deal with DirectTV where you can get a bundle w/ dish TV and verizon internet (and phone too). Of course, you'd be dealing w/ a dish so if you don't have a clear view of a south-facing sky, etc it would be a moot point. That being said, I'm not even sure if it's available in your area so you'd want to check on that.

I have DishTV and love it. For internet we use a loudoun wireless, but that won't help you. DSL for internet can be quite good, if you are close to the transmission point.

I live in Bristow too and I have Dish network for TV and Comcast for high speed Internet. I am happy with Comcast service. Is your PC directly connected to the Comcast Modem or through a wireless router ?. If it is through a wireless router, may be its a router issue.

Check out this link to test your connection speed

Yeah, I'm pretty embarrassed... Turns out it totally was a wireless router issue. See? I'm really not networking-oriented.

The good thing is that we now have a beautiful, shiny, FAST Apple Airport Extreme. Did you know you can fall in love with a router? 'Cause I'm here to tell you you can.

Our old D-Link was working fine until shortly before we moved out of our rental house in Alexandria. Looking back, I realize now that we started having problems with it the day someone cut our phone line on the outside of the house (that's a whole 'nother story). But anyway, it took me that long to put two and two together. Maybe there was a weird power surge or something that smacked down our router? I guess we'll never know.

Thanks, everyone, for all of your replies. We still pretty much hate Comcast for cable TV, so it's great to hear that those of you who have satellite options are pleased with what you're getting. We may well wind up going that route ourselves one of these first days.

DishTV has a fabulous DVR. You can record hundreds of hours of television. I love DishTV.

Hughesnet is terribly expensive and not all that fast. Really, it is only a viable option if you live in an area where you can't get internet any other way.

Verizon is great if you live either where there is FIOS, or close enough to get DSL. I used to live in Manassas and had Verizon DSL for years (and had DirecTV as my television provider) and then switched to Verizon FIOS for internet when they wired up my community.

I now live in Gainesville, and Comcast is the only real option for internet. It is awful, and goes out at least once a week for an hour or so. I've never seen such unreliable service. Verizon was solid as a rock, and hardly ever went down in the 7 years I had it (most of that time was DSL, the last year was FIOS).

Satellite TV is great, satellite internet - just terribly expensive and not all that fast.

My hope is Verizon will in 2 or 3 years wire up Gainesville and I can get rid of the lousy Comcast internet.
