Hello forum!

I will be heading back North for this upcoming holiday weekend, but next weekend I would like to bring you all my third photo tour of the region (see my former https://www.city-data.com/forum/north...ria+Photo+Tour or my https://www.city-data.com/forum/west-...rry+Photo+Tour as prior examples) and have tentatively narrowed my selection down to three distinctive towns in the area, each being roughly an hour away from my apartment in Reston.

Those who know me well know I have a fetish for history, so for this very reason all three towns are luring me in three opposing directions. I will likely bring you a tour of all three at some point this year, but which of these three listed would you like to see next weekend, and why?

I personally like Winchester. It's a nice small city that has a lot going for it. It has beautiful scenery and some small town appeal. I like the others, too, but Winchester is my favorite.

Since you've already headed west towards Harper's Ferry (nice pics btw), how about make the trip down 95 towards Fredericksburg. I think you'll like the downtown area. I would also make a trip to Central Park (Mega huge development) to kind of compare and contrast (Nice quaint pedestrian friendly downtown vs. huge sprawly development on steroids with limited access and tons of traffic. ) and show some of the points that you try to make in your other post about smart growth and urban planning.

If you decide to go to Fredericksburg, bring some good music. 95 has horrible congestion. I was actually just up there this weekend apartment hunting and there was a huge backup on the southbound lanes from near Dumfries to all the way down to Fredericksburg (about 25 miles) at 10am on a Saturday! Despite all that it's definitely worth checking out.

Good point, although Winchester has a nice pedestrian shopping street you can showcase. I think Fredericksburg is a very nice downtown, too. I think any would be nice.

Winchester.

Fredericksburg gets enough attention.

Culpeper is the redhead stepchild of the DC metro.

Which ever one has the best (if any) historic district! I don't know enough about either so I can't vote.

I grew up in Culpeper and I don't recall there being any gun shows. Not saying there were not any, but certainly not on a regular basis. Tractors through the drive-thru??? Maybe back in the 80's when it was still a cow town. I moved there in '88 from Staunton and even coming from there Culpeper seemed like the fourth ring of hell. It's been eleven years since moving away and I am amazed at how much the town has changed! It really does look like a suburb these days. Not on the level of Fairfax or Prince William but wow. If you do check it out Davis St. and East St. have some neat old buildings and houses. There is a house on East St. that I believe was used as a hospital during the civil war and some of the window sills actually have carvings of the soldiers names. I just heard that, never saw it so don't quote me. One of my favorite houses is actually there on the same street, it's an old brick victorian with all the trim painted black with a black iron fence around the yard, very gothic looking. Every holloween the owners always put a jack-o-lantern in the stained glass attic window. Other than that there is not much to Culpeper. I Think it's worth checking out, but it might be an afterthought.

How much has Culpepper changed in the last 15 years?
Is it still authentic and rural or is it another fake, phony chain stop?

Also why haven't YOU residents of Culpepper fought to preserve the characteristics?

I don't get why residents allow themselves to roll over for REMAX.
FIGHT!!!
Look at what Northern Fauquier has done...YOU CAN DO IT!
