We just adopted a six-month old lab mix and I would like to sign him up for dog obedience classes. Does anyone have any recommendations? I did a search and didn't find much. I am just looking for a basic class that isn't very expensive.

Thanks,
T

Default Fairfax County Parks and Recreation

Fairfax County Parks and Recreation has dog obedience classes. In their spring course catalog, there was a nice interview with a man who teaches classes in the Burke/West Springfield area (perhaps at South Run Rec Center). He sounded like a wonderful teacher--great with dogs and people. I'm sorry I don't remember his name.

You can get a copy of the autumn course catalog at the library and find out where/when the next classes will be.

Congratulations, and have fun with your dog!

Pender Vet Clinic in Fairfax has a great trainer that does puppy classes - and if you want to go more advanced she offers other classes - she uses positive reinforcement - I was amazed at the results.

Watch out for the "old time" dog trainers that use too much punishment -

One of my dogs is stubborn and not too bright on top of that but he did great in her class - dont have her name readily available but she is the only trainer there so just sign up - reasonable rates.

Our 10-month-old coonhound is currently going to obedience classes at the Springfield PetSmart and it's been a good class.
