My commute is by no means bad (13 miles, averaging 30 minutes), but when school starts, it goes back to being more like 45-50 minutes. I don't know why the difference. I guess more people today are driving their kids to school instead of letting them ride the bus. Just a theory though.

I think it's because people take more vacations this time of year. It seems like every time I send out an email at work I get an auto response saying so and so is on vacation. So I think that plays a big part. Because I didn't really notice a difference the first week after school let out but as the summer has worn on the commute gets better and better. I could used to this so I'm not looking forward to kids going back either.

Do they really need an education? Come on parents they have the internet what do they need teachers for? Let the kids play!

It is also because George Mason is a commuter school. So all the college students and faculty driving to mason.
Plus you school buses back on the roads, and parents can't start commuting until their kids are in school.
Leave earlier, just 30 min earlier makes a difference.
