I am getting so frustrated with the real estate agents I have been communicating with (yet to sign on with one person, which I would like to but haven't found anyone simpatico yet) who ask tons of questions and then send me stuff that doesn't fit the bill at all. It is so difficult house hunting from out of state but I am trying to at least narrow the search in terms of style and location. Does anyone know where folks in Vienna/Fairfax/McLean/Oakton might put their For Sale By Owner houses on the market. I am really trying to find something built either in the craftsman style, or an older (pre WW2) home and am sick of ploughing through MLS listings of mcMansions.....
Thanks for all your help!

I assume you have googled "for sale by owner fairfax va", there are many sites for fsbo's. As far as your criteria, the craftsman style homes by Sears will be mostly in Arlington and Alexandria. As far as pre WWII, most of the building in Fairfax County is post war. Again, you will find many pre war homes in Alexandria and Arlington, with a few available in Herndon (I found 2 in Reston on Old Reston Avenue). Usually these were once farmhouses and most will need work. You will have better luck with your search if you can consider Loudoun or Prince William County, there are many former farmhouses available there in both counties. You didn't mention your price range, these will not be cheap.
