We will be relocating to Northern Virginia next year. My husband will be working in Crystal City. My son (currently 2nd grade) has been in an independent school (our public schools are terrible) and will probably test into the gifted and talented program (he has tested very well in other iq testing). I also have a daughter (Kindergarten) that will probably do the same. Where should we look to purchase a home - what schools would be best for our needs? As our public schools system is aweful, any information on public schools would be appreciated.
Thank you so much.

FYI, Advanced Academic Programs is the new term for what we all call Gifted and Talented Programs in Fairfax County Public Schools.

I'm not familiar with Crystal City and so can't speak to specific schools. But the GT program doesn't start until 3d grade, so you'll want to look carefully at school boundaries. It very well could be that your daughter goes to one school (local elementary) while your son goes to another (each GT center has a catchment area of several elementary schools). Funding for busing to the GT centers is not guaranteed in future years, due to budget constraints.

If you tell us your price range, we'll be in a much better position to comment.

My children are GT and we recommend the Great Falls area. Forestville ES, Cooper Middle, and Langely High schools are the the best in Northern, VA and housing prices are reasonable at the moment and will surely hold or increase in value in the coming years. We decided against private school because those schools mentioned above are better than private.

Do not move south of Crystal City. Good luck!

The thread is over a year old. Great though that you could find one to tell us about your gifted children.

Did you not know that there are no average children anymore? NoVa reminds me of Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegone, where all the women are strong, and all the men are good looking and all the children are above average.

Or that in no way should anyone move south of Crystal City. Only defectives live south of there.
