Pretty much sums it up right here..

It took me several times of "thinking it won't be that bad" before I gave up on ever using 95S before 7 or 8 pm. From my experience it is usually a 3.5 to 4 hour crawl to Richmond if you leave around 4 or 5 pm. Summers are sometimes even worse.

Well, you're talking about people heading off for weekend trips and vacation and whatnot. The first (and last!) time I ever attempted this was for a trip down to the Outer Banks - in the fall, totally off-season (which is why we didn't think traffic would be an issue.) We sat and inched and sat and inched down 95. It was brutal. I live far enough west that I probably could have taken 66 to 81 to 64 and gotten there faster! Ugh.

We go to Delaware and New York a lot on weekends, and I would never head north on 95 on Friday afternoon either.

I frequently drive north on 95 around 3pm, usually starting about 5 miles south of the springfield interchange. I should note that I've only seen southbound traffic actually flowing once in the last 3 months around that time every day. It looks absolutely miserable.
