Are there any good ones? Since I moved here last November from NJ I haven't found any. I know there is supposed to be a authentic carry out in Takoma Park, MD like what I was used to, as opposed to some overpriced, Americanized sit down place. If I'm stuck here until sometime next summer I'd like to at least find some good food.

My guess is that you'll have more luck if you check for Cuban restaurants in this area than Puerto Rican or Dominican restaurants. How about Banana Cafe on Capitol Hill or Cuba de Ayer in Burtonsville?

After all, this is Washington DC, not Washington Heights.

Ehh... I've been to banana cafe before. I wasn't really impressed. At least they had some beers I drink there. I think I might check out the carry out in Takoma Park because I've heard good things about it. Unfortunately there isn't anything like that on the VA side.

There's also the Carribean Grill on Lee Highway (intersection with George Mason); it gets mixed reviews, but it's not too pricy and it does a good Cuban sandwich and ropa vieja. Not sure if it has a liquor license or not.

Default food

Are you looking for carry-out versus sit-down? Unfortunately, the DC-area is not strong in PR or DR cuisine, not easy to find a borinquen-style place --it's stronger in the Central American foods with South America, particularly, with Peruvian chicken joints and Brazilian "BBQ" coming in fast. I am also noticing a rise in Jamaican food.

What does happen though is that alot of Latin Am places will have a wide variety to choose from. Just take a look at menus and some things and try them out. You may want to ask the folks running the place too and ask how they're preparing the food. Lots of times, you'll see Salvadoreans offering the Peruvian chicken, etc.

One thing you'll see with the higher-priced sit-down restaurants is the "fusion cuisine", you know a little bit of the Caribbean, a little bit American. Some of it is designed for the American palate, hence, much of the seasoning/spicing will be altered or missing. Again, much of this may be testing the place but you'd probably already know what's best or not just from reading the menu.

Good luck! I'm getting hungry now talking about food!

LOL, the only Dominican food I eat is the one I make for myself, lol. I should open up a place in VA.

I have been thinking about this since I was in California, where one opened up for the first time this past summer.
I could just picure the menu specialties (Mondongo, Mofongo, Locrio de Bacalao, Mangu con Queso or Salchichon from breakfast and more).
I need a partner, LMFAO!
