Hey NoVA!

Since I am back to being close to my hometown of Hampton, I figure that I am way overdue for a visit there since I have some vacation time coming. The visit would be a one-day visit where I'd drive back the same day. I know I'm probably going to subject myself to punishment on I-95 but how can I subject myself to the least punishment?

A couple of plans.

Plan A

Leave early on a Sunday morning around 7 am and head back to Arlington about 5 pm.

Pros: I-95 HOV heads North on Sundays which will help for the ride back.
Cons: How is I-95 heading South that early on Sunday?

Plan B

Leave early Monday with times being the same.

Is either plan better than the other?

I think this plan will work fine for you. Since it's outside of typical vacation season, I-95 should pose no problems for you on Sunday morning/evening.

I recommend the Sunday trip. Heading out from Hampton Roads around 5 during the week can be a nightmare. You have the Naval Base traffic and the Shipyard traffic which has the potential to create a super traffic jam.

I say knock the time down to 6pm return and you are okay. Hampton Roads has so much military that the height of rush hour is around 3:30-5:30 after that its starts emptying out. After being in DC so long the Fort Eustis traffic won't seem as bad (since you are already on the right side of the river). Leaving DC at 7am is cake on any day of the week.
