That's ironic because it used to be an outdoor mall then they tore it down and put up the current one.

I was just about to post the same thing. That wasn't that long ago was it? My first job was at the old People's Drug Store.

I'd say maybe around 1985-1990 is when they remodeled it. I liked the outdoor format but it definitely looked very dated. If they just re-did the rooves it could have looked like the Leesburg Outlet Mall.

I found one source that says it was originally constructed in 1965 and the conversion to indoor mall was completed around 1990. Dead Malls dot Com: Feature: Landmark Mall: Alexandria, Virginia (http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:sBoUjph_q-sJ:deadmalls.com/malls/landmark_mall.html+%22landmark+mall%22+alexandria+ conversion+original&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us - broken link)

That's about right. My parents lived and worked around Landmark in the mid to late 1980's. They moved down to Dale City in '87 and it was still an open air center when they left for Beavercreek(Dayton), OH in 1989/early 1990. I was too young at the time but that's what they recall.

1990 sounds right for when the transformation was complete from outdoor to indoor mall. It truly IS ironic that there are now plans to change it back!

As I'm understanding it...the redevelopment plan has been approved, and ground breaking should begin by the first quarter of '09.

Seems like a long time away, but so did the Mixing Bowl project, which is nearing completion and is quite a masterpiece (just drove on it this morning). I hope the Landmark revitalization will be successful.

I'm eager to see how it goes myself...the West end of Alexandria could really use some revilatilzationing! :-) The far east section of Duke Street near Old Town has come a long way too! NoVa is builds, and builds a lot faster than Boston--which is pretty known for redevelopment projects.
