What is the process of obtaining a new Virginia Drivers license? My old one is about to expire. What is the turn around time? Thanks.

Go to the DMV, fill out the paperwork - they'll call you up, take the eye exam, get your picture taken, wait a few minutes and you have your license. Same as it's always been.

My understanding is the new "secure" licenses must be mailed to you. So you leave DMV with some sort of temporary license.
BTW, if one has had moving violations (two, I think) since the last renewal...they also require a knowledge test to renew.

No violations for me.
Yeah, that's what I heard though, they changed the process. You don't actually get your license on the spot. I'm leaving for Las Vegas in 5 days, so I don't want to screw myself.

When I went to get a new license last week, they gave me my old license back with a hole punch, and a printed out paper that's a 30 day temporary license. I think it takes a couple weeks to get it in the mail.

Hardly...
Jsut make sure you have ALL your documents...birth certificate, SS card, marriage license if needed (for name changes to birth certificate), proof of VA residency--utility bills, etc...
I saw alot of angry people being turned away. Additionally if you plan on renting a vehicle you will find alot of misinformed agents who have no idea about the new license and how it is mailed to you...

If your old one hasn't expired yet, do it online. I did mine last Monday and had it in my hand in Friday's mail. You'll save $5 also this way.
