Hi - I would like to become a license teacher in VA. I hold a BFA and am looking to become a certified teacher in Art. I have looked up a lot of information and am confused more now than ever. Alternative route seems like it may fit me but do I then just take courses to try to get a license and the PRAXIS on my own? do I look into an Elementary degree and see how many courses I would need? OR do I go for the Masters in Education and start fresh? Right now I am looking to do some type of online program or program that has night classes as I watch my children during the day.

ANY info would be great! I don't even know where to begin! How do I start?

Thanks so Much!

I'm not sure where you're located, but I'm currently in a masters program at Marymount University. They're based in Ballston, but I'm taking the weekend program which is in Reston. It's 2 years, and you attend every other weekend (Friday from 6-10 pm, Saturdays 9-3). In the summer, it's every weekend. You can get your masters in elementary or secondary. The requirements are very different between the two, so you should figure out which you want.

I chose to take a full program (as opposed to just passing the tests) for a few reasons.

1) I didn't feel like I had the skills to go into a classroom yet (I'm a career switcher from IT). I wanted to learn teaching strategies/methodologies and behavior management tactics
2) I couldn't figure out exactly what I needed on my own. Marymount laid it out for me, analyzed my undergrad transcripts, and told me exactly which tests I needed to pass and courses I needed to take.
3) I wanted help figuring out how/where/when to interview and find a job.

George Mason offers night classes as well, but their program was more expensive than MM's Reston cohort. Feel free to contact me if you have specific questions!
