Metro confirms there has been a derailment of a six-car train near the Farragut North station in Northwest.

The train, on the Red Line, was headed in the direction of Shady Grove Metrorail.
Metro officials and DC Fire and EMS are investigating the incident which occured at 10:13a.m.

Authorities are at the scene trying to get passengers off the train. There is no word on injuries.
A preliminary report from Metro says the front wheels of lead car came off the tracks.

They've already re-opened the station.

Default Metro problems

I am very glad to know that no one was hurt. Seems like the Metro system has really been having problems with accidents in that last few years. I wonder if this is usual or if the system is getting old or if there are funding issues or what? We are moving back to D.C. metro area and one of the things that is so great about it is the Metro system. I've been on these systems all over the world and the D.C. metro system was always the best.

I was expecting to hear about problems with the outdoor tracks, not one of the tunnel tracks. Glad nobody was hurt. I guess it's a good thing a lot of people took personal leave today.

Take a look at the readers' comments in the Washington Post's online edition about how their commute to work was today -- absolutely horrendous even before the Red Line derailment. The truncated Orange Line sounded like an absolute nightmare.

There was a scandal a few years ago involving some Metro workers. They were scamming tons of $$$ from Metro. I wouldn't be surprised if something similar is still going on. There is no reason why metro can't fund itself. I kept hearing about metro breaking single day records during the Inauguration & other events. As far as I know, the DC tourism was not severly impacted by the economy last year. Where's the money? Bernie Madoff? Mayor Fenty?

That's why I stayed home. But, what do you expect after a record breaking storm. I mean really!

You mean the parking lot attendants from a few years ago? The money they were pocketing needed to be stopped (which is why they switched to the card and away from using attendants) but the money they pocketed is a drop in the bucket compared to the money a Metro system needs. I would be interested to hear of any metro system that funds itself.
