I hope someone can help me out here. Unlike most people, my husband and I actually prefer--strongly--older neighborhoods, particularly mid-century ones (cape cods, ranchers, etc.). We really love the "older" neighborhoods, though not the historic district-type, with 100 year-old houses. It seems that most of the houses listed in western Fairfax or Loudoun counties tend to be new or new-ish, meaning constructed in the 80's or later.

Are there any areas out in this area that have older, modest, mid-century homes available? I know it's just sentiment, but no matter how I try (and I have tried), I really just can't picture us living in a newer suburban area, but nothing else seems practical at the moment?

Are there any pockets of 40's,50's,60's, houses we've missed in this area?

Well you're looking for houses in the newest part of the area though. Have you looked in Vienna or Falls Church? The only thing about Vienna is that the traffic is the absolute worst. But Vienna is really nice and has a some houses built in the 60s. Also Vienna is very expensive. I'd say give Falls Church a try. If living outside the beltway is a priority then yeah try Vienna but Falls Church will have more of the housing options you seek.

parts of fairfax might have what you're looking for. I agree though that it will be much easier to find older neighborhoods inside the beltway.

You can find a fair amount of older ranchers in Alexandria, Annandale and (I believe) Springfield. It depends on your price range. Will you be working in western Fairfax /eastern Loudoun?

Would anyone know if older homes can be found in Leesburg or points north/northwest?

Leesburg, Old Ashburn, Sterling (20164 & 20165), and Herndon all have homes built in the 50's and 60's. Also there are 2 pockets in Sterling that have older homes that were built individually, not part of a development-Broad Run Farms and Richland Acres. Depending on how far west you want to go, there are also homes in that age bracket in Hamilton, Purcellville, Lucketts, Round Hill and Hillsboro. Try homesdatabase.com and select the older age brackets.

Sterling, particularly Sterling Park, which was built in the early 1960s and showcased homes made of steel siding. Here are some current listings.

Yes, Leesburg has plenty of 50's neighborhoods. Herndon also has plenty of older 40's and 50's homes. Reston has quite a few built in the early 60s. If you want Loudoun County, the parts of Countryside closest to the river were built back in the 40s. I think it's called Broad Run Farms or something like that. There's also a neighborhood called Richland Acres that's between Algonkian Parkway and Rt. 7. Driving through there is like going through a time warp.
