It's better, but they are still short $ as evidenced by the salary freeze. I agree that there are still cuts in spending that could be made to help make up the difference.

Most people in the workforce are dealing with the same thing.
It's still nice for teachers to only work 2/3 of the year at full salary though.

My point was that they are still short $ as evidenced by two years of pay freezes (actually, take home pay has dropped as has entry level pay). A first year teacher with a MA makes $49,823. Not bad, I agree, but remember I'm writing this on the same board where a 24 year old making $61k was advised in a different thread to really budget or have a roommate to make it in this area. A 10 year teacher with a MA makes $60,911.
Now, I have to tell you that I hate when people play the "other people are dealing with the same thing" card. I have been with FCPS for 17 years and rarely if ever complained about salary. However, I am getting very tired of this attitude such as yours. I remember specifically when County employees were getting 4% and 5% raises (2000-2002 I believe), school employees received 2% and were supposed to be ok with it. Now we are supposed to be ok with 0% and no step because others aren't seeing raises either.
When times were good, and people saw bonuses, large % raises and increasing 401k values, if teachers pushed at all for better pay I heard a lot of comments such as, "Well, you knew that when you chose your profession. Too bad". Now, when times aren't so good, the same people are saying, "Hey, you should take a pay cut and reduced benefits because I'm not getting bonuses and my 401k is tanking. Waaaahhh".
When times were good it has always been "What until it gets better" and when it's not so good I hear the same thing. Well, I'll push for that whopping 1% COLA whether you like it or not.
