I couldn't think of a better title as I am trying to find some information quickly.

My little elderly lady friend just told me that she received her renewal for her handicap placard in the mail, and she is about to send her payment in, but she plans to put $5 cash in the envelope. I don't think you can do that. You can pay with cash, in person, at the DMV offices, but I don't think they accept cash by mail. She said that she would not mail the letter out until I've had a chance to read what the DMV sent her.

Does the VA-DMV accept cash by mail?

Thanks!

I don't now the answer offhand, but my guess is they won't accept it.

Never mind. Got my answer.

I was trying to find info on the VA-DMV site that explicitly said not to send cash in the mail, but I couldn't find anything. I wanted to print it out to show her, as she seemed reluctant to write a check (probably because it was such a small amount). Plus, I had started to doubt myself when I couldn't find the info I was looking for on the DMV website.

When I went to her home and looked at what the DMV had sent her, it said to pay by check. She had not noticed that particular sentence. Fortunately, I caught her in time. She had the envelope addressed and sealed with the money and the original invoice (no copy for her records) ready to go.

My little friend is getting to the point where she throws away mail that is not what she usually gets. She accidentally threw away her VA ID card renewal and the first notice from the DMV about her placard, so I had to do some fancy footwork to get her another one before her expiration date of March 31, 2010. We'll go to the DMV in April to get her a new ID card. I'm glad she has her regular monthly bills paid through her bank.

VRE332: Thanks for the info, but this gal is in her upper 80s and not computer savvy at all, and she does not like doing telephone transactions where you have to listen and press a button for this and press a button for that.

Again, never mind folks, never mind.

Your guess is correct. Thanks.

You know, I did not see your post earlier. I wonder if the time is kind of off on City-Data because of Daylight Savings Time. I wrote my original note around 4:30 p.m., not at 3:30 p.m. I better check my settings.

Every bill you can pay by mail says "Do not send cash"....but that's not because they wouldn't accept cash, it's just that they know that their employees (or a contractor's employees) would probably steal it.

That would be especially true of DMV....their low level clerks that open mail make very little to start with....plus, they haven't received a COLA in years....are facing furloughs...rising health insurance premiums, etc. Anyway, I imagine that morale is so low that your friend's fiver would have like a 99.999% chance of ending up in someone's pocket.

PS: I haven't seen it lately, but bills used to say, "Do not send cash or postage stamps". Postage stamps? I used to wonder who the hell would try to pay a bill with a bunch of stamps! But I guess it happened, or they wouldn't have been telling people not to do it...

If you can help her with internet, you can do a lot of things online these days. I just paid my registration renewal online and they give a discount as well.

I tried to call them a week ago using the 1-800 number listed on the website and it said that the new number was the 804 number listed above. Being a long distance call, I couldn't make it from work. What a pain.
