Normie, our truly "native" grasses aren't like what you have in your lawn ("turf grass"), they're more like wild rye or switchgrass (what you might think of as ornamental grasses). Since you're above the fall line out where you are, this list of "piedmont" native plants has some of the grasses normal for your area:

I seeded in the spring before, don't do it. I then seeded in the fall, like the 2nd week of September...much much better results. I tried all kinds of grass. Don't buy grass at home depot. Lowes or a local store is better (like tractor supply). I know KY blue grass seemed to work if I remember. Make sure you dig up just a little where you are putting seed, like aeration or something. Make sure birds don't come to eat your seed. But yet, the red dirt here in No Va is awful. Good luck.
