I was told today that white LED turn signals I have on the front of my truck would be illegal if I switched my tags over to Virginia. I have been trying to google for an answer for about a half hour now with no luck. Does anyone know if they are really illegal here, or where I could find the answer? They have amber lights with a clear lens, if that matters.

Take your vehicle to a garage that performs state inspections. I suspect that they should be able to tell you. You'll need a VA state inspection if you switch over anyway.

The relevant part of the VA law is:

LIS > Administrative Code > 19VAC30-70-190

It states:

"D. Inspect for and reject if:

[...]

8. Turn signal lens is not clear or amber to the front, or red or amber to the rear. Lens or bulb color has been altered or modified. If the turn signal lens is clear, then the bulb shall be amber.
NOTE: The pink color lens found on 1998 and 1999 Honda Accords emit the proper color light (amber) when the lamp is activated. There may be other manufacturers using the same configuration and are not in violation of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards;"

edit: Oops, you said your lights are amber. Sounds like you're good to go, then.

When in motion, there can be no white lights showing on the back of your car...it will appear that you're going forward! White lights signal to other drivers that you're coming toward them!

As long as they light up amber you are good to go. I've had clear lenses with silver bulbs that light up amber for years.
