All,

I received an e-mail from my complex today stating that they will not be switching over to AC for about another month. (Last week of April - first week of May) Many of residents are pregnant, have young children/pets, and health conditions. I myself have acute asthma and the heat coupled with the pollen is giving me a hard time. (Our house was 91 degrees yesterday.)

In our lease it does state that AC is an amenity; however, is there anything I can do to get the complex to turn it on sooner? I have already sent an e-mail expressing my concern. Are there any laws that will protect us or can I get out of my lease?

Thank for your help!

My complex is doing the same thing to us. I think sadly the only way you'll survive the next couple of days is to buy a fan. The complex likely is too cheap to turn the AC on then go back to heat. It sucks.

Legally there is nothing you can do. But, nothing says everyone can't start calling management asking for the AC. But you know as well as I do as soon as the AC is turned on too soon it will turn cold again and everyone will be begging for heat.

That reminds me of living in Dorms in college. One of the first things I look for (now) when renting is a central AC which I can control. Invaluable, even if your utility bills will suffer. You may look into buying an indoor air conditioner that vents via a hose. Spend 500 bucks, and you'll be able to take it with you when you move.

The weather is supposed to cool off tomorrow. Not sure what your lease states but if you can buy/borrow an AC window unit, it's a lifesaver. Good luck and keep cool!!

They do that because they have learned that we are never out of the woods until late April, so there will almost certainly be another cold snap in the next few weeks.
