What a great thread and photos. I've wanted to get into either canoing or kayaking but haven't done so yet. Interested in placid river sightseeing, not sporting. Thanks for the thread.

GreenGene: What's the best way to get to Mason Neck park? We're thinking of going to Occoquan for the Oktoberfest and then hiking in the park afterwards.

For us, going from Dale City, it's pretty easy. Prince William Parkway east to Woodbridge, left on Rt. 1 north, over the Occoquan, then right on Gunston Road. Then you just follow the signs.

From Occoquan, the most direct route would be Rt. 123 (Gordon Blvd) east, past 95, to Route 1. Left on Rt. 1 - the left and middle lanes on 123 have to turn left onto Rt. 1. Then north on Rt. 1 - stay in the left lane - the right lane must exit onto 95. After Rt. 1 becomes two lanes again, I believe Gunston Road is at the next traffic light. There's a Shell station on the right, and a right turn lane onto Gunston.

You'll see Pohick Bay Regional Park on the left (3-4 miles down the road), and a ways past that, Mason Neck State Park will be on the right.

We successfully kayaked today, although it was more of a workout than either of us really wanted.

We went back to our favorite - the Occoquan - putting in at Fountainhead. And it was (as we all know) a really, really nice day today. But it was windy ... not nearly as windy as yesterday at Mason Neck, but still not nearly as calm as we like. There was no coasting today - we either paddled or let the wind push us around.

And it sure was pretty.

We got out on the water again yesterday, trying Mason Neck one more time, and this time it was great - no wind at all when we got there, and only a gentle breeze by the time we left.

We launched from the canoe/kayak launch point - a nice sandy spot - and paddled down and into Kane's Creek. Plenty of birds - eagles, ospreys, egrets, heron - and they were all plenty shy. I think I need to get a camera with a bigger zoom lens.
