Haven't been on for a while but I currently live in Fredericksburg and I work in DC.

I take the VRE DAILY and have to have a monthly pass.

Previous posters are right. You can sleep, read, drink coffee and YES the trains are clean.

Summer crowds are a little different but still, its a decent ride.

Springfield to Fredericksburg should be fine, depending on where you work. Quick question though, how would you get from downtown Fredericksburg to your job? Where are you employed?

I know theres the FRED line - some type of public transportation...

Good luck

I drive from NoVa to Richmond on a regular basis. VRE may not work so great for you because you are reverse commuting -their schedule is designed for people traveling in the opposite direction. Springfield to F'burg is not a bad commute, occasionally in the summer you will find yourself stuck in traffic on the way home on Friday PM, due to folks heading to their vacation destinations. The time of day honestly does not matter, as long as you are not trying to go with rush hour traffic (which is reverse for you, so shouldn't happen), and construction isn't causing trouble -dial 511 and check before you leave work. You can always take route 1 if something bizarre happens, like a semi-truck overturns and shuts down I-95. And if you work weekends, I-95 is unpredictable in the afternoons, so beware.

I used to commute from Springfield to Woodbridge and it wasn't bad at all. If you are going from Springfield to Fredericksburg, I would give yourself an hour at least. Isn't it like 45 miles one way? Man that is a lot of driving. Good luck.
