I am interested in having my family join an outdoor pool this summer. Hopefully one where we can go and also do swimming lessons for the kids. Anyone know of one in Herndon/Reston or practical leads on where to go looking for one? And maybe one that is not too expensive.

I believe that Hunter Mill Swim Club has openings. Hunter Mill Swim and Racquet Club.

To use the Reston pools, you have to have pool passes. I believe that you do not have to be a resident to get pool passes, but you'll have to pay more if you are not a resident. Don't ask me how much, I wasn't paying attention when we went in to get our passes, just vaguely noticed a sign.

They do have swim lessons all summer. The schedule can be found here:
https://reston.org/ParksRecreationEv...2b9ikVbw%3d%3d

Last week we found that the earliest sessions for our beginner were full already, but there was still room in July and later.

No, we don't live in Reston, so we can't use the Reston pools. We ended up joining www.herndonswims.com

If you're referring to the membership costs for the Herndon pool that's on their website, then, no, that's really not bad and probably about average for private pools in the area. All have yearly maintenance fees that can run $300 and up. Some have high costs to join, depending on the charter for the pool and how it is set up. Some hold and sell shares. Others are private transactions that can go for the market value. I've seen some pool memberships go for $1000.

When we lived in McLean, we had several families from Great Falls at our pool, because the Great Falls Swim Club has an $8000 bond to join, only 25% of which you get back when you resign. And $700 annual dues. (And it still has a two-year waiting list). Herndon is a real bargain by comparison.

The Hunter Mill one was obviously higher than the Herndon one. But we don't go to the pool enough to make $150+/month worth it...which is why the Reston pools are perfect for us. Of course if you live in Reston and use the RA pools every day, you are getting an absolute steal.

Of course, I also refuse to pay $100+/month for gymnastics or dance schools and prefer to use the community centers for my kids gymnastics and dance classes.

Oh, and we're all poor and stuff...at least by NoVA standards.

I had no idea what a screaming deal the Reston pools are.
