I have an old car that my spouse has gotten sentimentally attached to. She doesn't want me to sell it so I'm thinking about entering a "good" tow truck company phone # in my cell phone just in case it dies. Someone that can go anywhere from the beltway to route 7 in tysons. Thanks.

Default Call a charity that will accept your donated vehicle

There are charities that will come pick up your car for free if you donate to then, even cars that are not running. Purple Heart (I donated a car to them) and the Lupus Foundation are two. Maybe some others have more suggestions.

I just added towing through my insurance. $7/month for roadside assistance, and they'll call whomever is closest to where I am at the time.

$7x12 (months) = $84/year. Last time someone towed my car it was around $45-50. I'd rather have a company with a good reputation that I can call up and save me the $30 or so.

You might be surprised. When I had my car towed a couple months ago after an accident, the bill was $120. (Not sure if it cost more since it was late at night?). I submitted it to insurance who reimbursed me. The insurance also covers being locked out, needing the battery jumped, fixing flat tires, etc.

But you're right in that it's a gamble, and if you don't think you'll ever need it it's better not to pay up front.

Just get a AAA plus membership, which should cover towing in the Metro area, along with the other benefits.

I've always had towing on my insurance, and it's come to my rescue several times over the years. Well worth it. This has the benefit of not having to angst over the reliability of some random tow outfit--the insurance company has already done the vetting in your area. I could never understand the utility of joining AAA. I get towing; I can retrieve maps and identify a travel route on my own, and other organizations I belong to get me the same motel discounts.
