My first place was a townhouse, and I never felt people looked down on me. To be honest, I doubt anyone will care where you live.

Consider the people who post on this forum. Do you have any idea if they live in a house, townhouse, or apartment? Unless they've specifically said, I'll bet you can't guess.

And remember, plenty of people with money live in townhomes (and also apartments) because it works with their lifestyle. FWIW I hear Donald Trump's son lives near here in a townhouse.

The OP maybe put it a bit bluntly, but I do actually understand his/her point. Where I grew up in Georgia, townhomes were not a common style of living. They were viewed as being on par with apartment communities (and I'm not talking about nice ones with pools, golf courses, etc. that you find around here, but non-descript "stuff as many units as you can into the property with asphalt parking lots wherever a building isn't" style). Townhomes at best were a quaint option for people who couldn't afford "real" SFHs, which by the way started at well under $50,000.

When my wife and I moved here, neither one of us had lived in a place where townhomes were a common, accepted way of life. We quickly realized the reasons why townhomes were prevalent (cost of land, sprawl, etc.) and that it was a perfectly fine, more-than-acceptable abode for all income levels. I'll admit though, we still find it laughable that some THs advertise fenced-in yards. (No offense, but when a "yard" is about the size of a cubicle, it's not a yard. Green-space, extended patio, etc. maybe, but it's not a yard.)

To those who grew up in this area, or have lived here for a while, I can understand your defensiveness about the townhome lifestyle. Just understand that for some areas of the country, townhomes are far from the norm. In these parts of the country, townhome living would be equivalent to living in the worst neighborhoods off of Route 1, and I know that plenty of people on this message board thumb their noses at that.

I have two friends from Orange County and I've tried to explain to them a few times what a townhouse is. When I used to live in one and I tried to explain it, they were clueless. At the time, they just didn't have such a structure in their area. They also didn't know that when they came to a winter climate to visit they ought to bring socks (which they didn't own) so there you go...
