I was born in Hammond & lived ther until I was 6. My grandparents lived there until I was 12. I am now 40. Was just wondering how safe certain areas are. Such as S. Clarke Ave., which is the last place I lived. And the area around Lincoln Grade School, where I attended kindergarten. Also curious about Beal St., where my grandparents lived for 20 years.

I don't know all the areas of Hammond but we are looking to buy a house and we would ONLY consider the few blocks around Purdue...plus watch the property taxes! They are at 5.8%

So the rest of the city must be pretty bad. Thought about visiting those old neighborhoods, but maybe not.

No, the rest of the city is not "pretty bad". The area where you grew up is not the best (if you're not familiar with the area anymore, I wouldn't go after dark), but there are plenty of nice areas in Hammond that are not immediately surrounding Purdue.

The grass isn't always greener on the other side. In the past 5 years, I have lived in three different states. We are finally going home to Hessville. We lived in "good" neighborhoods and in the outskirts of cities, the countryside, and none were any better than Hammond. Unfortunately, due to city ordinance, we will be unable to live in Hessville, as being retired military we picked up a few pets along the way. Although, they are all spay/neutered and only use the outside when necessary, we are over the limit. But, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will be spending most of my time in Hessville/Hammond. Until you've been away from home, you can't appreciate what you had. Hammond isn't perfect, but that can be said about any city or town throughout the USA.

Hammond is nowhere near O'hare. You would be much better off looking in IL...even if you had to find a place way out due to budget you would still most likely have a easier commute.
