Riding through the city of Whiting, I noticed the residential and commercials were very clean. How does Whiting keep its surroundings so nice?

Pretty simple. With Whiting being as small and close-knit of a community that it is, it maintains a lot of pride and is much easier to manage than a larger city. The revenue that the city receives as well helps ensure that there will be funds to keep the area beautiful. More recently as Whiting has been reinventing itself as a destination for yuppies and travelers (still in progress), it has an interest in maintaining the upkeep of the city in order to attract more upscale development.

Perhaps, but you can't smell particulate matter which I am sure is very high due to the heavy industrialization of the immediate area.

The mayor. He has a vision for Whiting. When old folks pass on, he buys up the properties. He doesn't want meth houses in there and he'll just tear down and build something nice. Whiting is getting better. Whiting has a gem in the lake. He took full advantage of it. It's not junky. If you want to use it...you'll pay for it. That keeps that area nice. Other areas around the region, like Highland, have zero vision and a super corrupt town council. So, nothing can be done for Highland until that town council changes. Bring in a leader such as Whiting's mayor, and you'll see greater changes.

Where is your proof for the above bolded statements?

From what I hear from coworkers that live in Whiting is that a lot of the homes stay in the family more so than what you would find anywhere else in NWI. And there has been people moving in mostly due to the nice town that it is along with proximity to Chicago.

Warning - old thread revival!

Curious what the current vibe is in Whiting? Are the local steel mills still active?

Yes, the mills are still in operation. Went to Whiting frequently as a teen because my parents owned a business there. To me the air quality was/is more impacted by the BP refinery and what is today Cargill than the mills. That's just my opinion though.
