Thinking about heading to Indiana and I've been mainly looking at the Fort Wayne Area but I would like some insight on what the good parts of NWI are. I just want a nice town near Lake Michigan and has enough stuff going on to where I never have to go to Chicago. Any parts of NWI that fit the bill for me or is the Fort Wayne area more for me?

Valparaiso and Chesterton aren't that far from the lake. If you were to look in Lake County, Munster, Crown Point, Winfield, St John, Schererville and even Cedar Lake now are pretty nice.

Winfield, Winfield Twp, and Lakes of the Four Seasons should also be included on the list.

Based on the OPs previous posts about going off grid, I don't think NWI is the right place for relocation.

I don't think living in NWI, would preclude someone from building a house not connected to the electrical grid(assuming you were referring to that). But that's just me.

Besides Valpo and Chesterton, I'd argue Hobart, Crown Point, and Griffith are pretty nice too. And to a lesser extent, I also like the Hessville area of Hammond. The downtown area of Whiting is pretty nice, as well.

If you also want some other ideas of nice places east of Lake County and Porter County but still in NWI, I'd also look at Michigan City. Further east and between MC and South Bend if you more wanted a smaller town, New Carlisle is also nice. And it isn't too far from a South Shore Line flag stop station (Hudson Lake).

Definitely St. John, Crown Point or Valp. St. John voted safest city in Indiana in 2020. I would not include Hammond or Griffith. I would also say NWI in general is nicer than the Ft. Wayne area. Just my honest opinion! In regards to not needing to go to Chicago, well there's nowhere in Indiana that would be anything like Chicago. Indianapolis would be closest, but still doesn't compare. There's no great museums here or big theaters like in Chicago and shopping can't even compare, but it just depends exactly on what you're looking fore. Off the grid, well as soon as you get past Cedar Lake, you're in the cornfields.

Michigan City has high crime rate, looked at several sites, one site says it is only 6% safer than other U.S. cities, D+ on 2nd website I looked at and an F and on the 3rd website.

I second Hobart, Crown Point, and Whiting. Michigan City seemed pretty mellow to me. Maybe there are tough parts of it that can be avoided?

Not from NW Indiana but due visit every couple of years, usually lodging there and visiting Chicago and Indiana Dunes. Best areas seem to be Crown Point, Munster, Valpo. Places like Hammond or Chesterton are so so. Gary is quite rough and run down.
