Portage used to be very comparable to Hobart and Griffith in that all 3 were blue collar hometown pride communities. Now, Portage seems to be getting increasingly poorer and worse off overall and the pride is not there as much. Portage Township Schools is not a good district, so all the people moving to Porter County with money move into Duneland or Valparaiso (and occasionally one of the township school districts).

Portage seems to becoming more like Lake Station except with more retail and population obviously. There are still some aspects of Hobart that Portage possesses, and aspects of Merrillville now as well in town. Plenty of folks from Lake County and even Illinois are moving to P-Town, and it's not those with money. Portage probably isn't even that bad, but compared to the rest of the county, it sure is lagging far behind at this point. Curious to get people's thoughts on Portage and the future of it.

People are trying to get further away from Chicago. 5 murders in Hammond in the last week. There use to be a time where people from Illinois considered Hammond a affordable safe zone. That’s no longer the case. Portage is now considered the affordable safe zone. Gary is considered dangerous to Chicago residents now. Back in the day people from Chicago considered Gary slow paced and affordable. They didn’t mind the danger due to the danger they faced in Chicago. Now? Chicago people see Hammond and Gary as to close to Chicago and not safe enough. Portage is the sweet spot. Still safe and not expensive enough to keep people out.
