You might want to check out a very reliable site, www.vrbo.com (http://www.vrbo.com - broken link) ...they have listings for rental properties and cover all of the islands. We have went through them and found our "new home" when we move over next month from the mainland. The property owner worked a deal with us, compared to what was shown on his site, as we explained we were transferring, not vacationing, and we managed to get a year long lease. We checked out all the details and felt totally comfortable with everything before we signed. We felt this (vrbo) was much better and safer than craigslist. Just my two cents.

according to your desired prices:
Rent: $1,300
Electric: $200
Fuel: $200-$300
Food: $500-$600
Internet/Cable: $75

Rent, electricity and internet is doable but fuel will be more. Hawai'i has some of the highest fuel costs because on top of what people pay in the mainland you have to add on shipping fees to that which the consumers pay. Food is the same deal, it will cost more then what you are elotting. I think realistically you will probably be wanting to visit places on the island in your spare time so so fuel will be a lot. and food is REALLY expensive here. A basic rule of thumb is x your rent x3 and if you can afford that, you can afford to live there. So if you can afford $3900 a month you can afford to live someplace. Thats including rent, utilities, groceries, gas, household items, going out etc. I would think being tourists however, that price would probably be higher because you'd be using more gas to visit places on the island and paying more to go out to eat more usually. There are places that include utilities in rent, but usually just water and internet or cable. Electricity which is the highest utility usually isnt included and the places that DO include it, arent places you want to usually live. Im also sad to say, the animal thing is a HUGE disadvantage for you. Rentals here almost never allow animals. Its not like the mainland where its pet friendly or you can pay more for animals like a deposit. There just usually isnt any animals allowed, let alone THREE of them. Thats gonna be tough. Id say 95% (or more) places are no animals allowed. Maybe if you find a house that's renting a room and they have animals, it might work... but otherwise you might have to look into housing for them elsewhere while youre in the islands.
