Depending upon the time of day that you would be commuting it could take as long as 2 -2.5 hours each way (and Heaven help you if there is an accident or it rains!!!).

Most people would hate it; but if you are the type that likes to pop in an audio book or is happy just listening to favorite tunes then you may survive with your "cool" intact.

It IS a long commute- but many find it worth the hassle in order to live in the North Shore (which can be spectacular).

I had a friend who lived in north shore and had to commute to UH. He would seriously run to get to his car before 3:30 to avoid heavy traffic. Even without the traffic he was looking at an hour and a half commute each way. He did this twice a week and hated it. Another thing you should take into consideration is the commute length on your car. Lets just say you drive about 70 miles a day (roundtrip), you would put over 16,000 miles per year on your car JUST commuting. If i were you and wanted to get out of town but wanted a more reasonable commute, I would probably live windward side.

Agree with slick828. Windward side is kind of like Haleiwa; it's a lot more laid back that in Honolulu and with a lot of nice beaches too.

I stay at a friend's house on the north shore like once or twice a week. I HATE driving into work in the morning. It takes me about 2 hours usually. I work downtown right now & am going back to school in August so while I would love to live out there, I could never handle the drive every day. It is easier to make the drive not during rush hour but you're still looking at an hour or more. So it could depend on what your work schedule would look like too. I kinda laugh now when I think about how much I hated a 25 minute commute back in IL lol 25 minutes is nothing now. I'd try it for a month or two before you sign a long lease or buy a house though.

op, you need to specify where in honolulu. personally, i'd avoid it as much as possible. are you on island? i'm east of downtown, so that means i have to drive across most of honolulu to get inland before clearing town traffic. i pay attention to my driving times when i've gone up to haleiwa, and times (one way) range from 45 minutes to 90 depending on traffic.

traffic here really sucks. my advice for anyone looking to establish here is live where you work. you'll save a lot of gas, time, money, and lower your anxiety level.

bottom line, you'll hate doing it every day. there's too many other people trying to do it too, and you'll have to fight for road space.
