Obon in October? We have ours in July and August on the Big Island. Although, perhaps it takes longer on islands with more Hongwanjis. Everyone goes to Obon, it's a great way to meet the neighbors. There is usually Obon dance practice for several months before the Obon season, too, so you have a chance to learn the different Obon dances as well as meet folks.
Lol it sounds like your losing your Milhini(newcomer) phase and gaining your transplant phase lol, Congrads. It only gets better with time and coupled with the ability to have acceptance(which sounds like you have done) and awareness are all keys to success. As a suggestion only, make sure you take time to enjoy the things that make Hawai'i different besides its weather and slow pace of life, experience unique foods you can't get on the mainland, take advantage of the asian part of the culture, checkout the Obon festival since it october. Get involved in the community if you have time? These things will also open up a new awareness and bring with it more rewards.
Isnt it great it be able to slow down and enjoy a slower pace? My hope will be that you will find that love for Hawai'i that you hear some people talk about. P.S. Make sure you get out of town once in awhile lol. And in a good way im envious of you. E'Mahalo Aloha A hui hou.

Mahalo for the correction, don't want to ever intentionally mislead anyone. I can be wrong and that is ok. For some reason i have always remembered Obon Festival from my hanabata days in october, but im also getting lolo(dense in my old age) and it was along time. Once again Mahalo for the correction.
Further, i agree 100% with what you said about learning and meeting people.

As I understand it, Obon, aka Spirit festival, aka Ghost Festival, the Buddhist Festival to honor and celebrate ancestors, was traditionally celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh month... an auspicious date numerologically... using the Asian Lunar Calendar.
In the modern era it is celebrated in many places in mid-August, but in some places on July 15, which is 15th day of 7th month in the Western Calendar.
