Planning to take 10 days and spend in Honolulu either the end of April of start of May. Wanting to be there at a somewhat low season time, when the city is less crowded. A friend of mine mentioned the end of April is not a good time as the Japanese have a holiday and many leave Japan for Hawaii. Is this correct? Which would be the better time (slower, less crowded).....end of April or start of May?

High Season is generally whenever kids are not in school on the mainland or Holiday Periods. Therefore, high season with higher airfare and hotel would be from around the few days before Memorial Day to just after Labor Day. Also, Spring Break - which varies in the March/April timeframe. Tack on the days around Presidents Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Xmas, New Year's - any big holiday period.
Japanese golden week is exactly at that time, end of april thru first week of May. If you're flexable, search daily for flight costs, a LOT of money can be saved with good bargains. Search online during the week day vs weekend and be ready to book when the cheap flights open up, esp. if you're flying Hawaiian Air.
