Hi I'm a registered nurse looking to move to Oahu to work and attend UH to complete my masters and stay in Hawaii. I have visited the islands several times. I will be moving with 3 cats. I'm looking to either ship my car or buy a new one on the island. Any words of wisdom or advise?
There is a huge nursing glut on Oahu. HUGE. So finding a nursing job here might be a bit difficult.
That said, you may find openings in specialty areas if you have experience.
In what field of nursing do you have experience?
And I'm not being rude here---REAL experience. I mention this because new grads are now putting their nursing school learning experiences as work experience on their employment applications. Really---I've seen applicants list "critical care experience" and, when asked to clarify, they cited the rotation that they went through in nursing school. Please forgive if this question offends---no offense meant.
Okay.
Where are you coming from? The cost of shipping a car from the East Coast, for example, might have you rethinking the car shipping thing.
The three cats will definitely be an issue when you look for a rental.

My nursing experience is in med-surg, PACU and L&D, women's health. I served 12 years in the navy nurse corps. I've been a nurse for 20 years.
I would either ship my car from California or buy a new one.

Since you're a veteran I believe you'd get hiring preference at Tripler and you have great experience.
Queen's Medical is the biggest hospital on Oahu. RN's with experience in specialty areas have the best chance of finding a position there. Otherwise, they're not hiring (with rare exception and then it's a "who you know" thing).
Their website is grossly out of date as far as the nursing job info goes, BTW. The pay scale is four years old and I don't think they've given relocation bonuses to RN's for quite some time, unless it's for one with a very specific specialty.
